Car Division - Class 4
Effective September 1, 2008

Class 4 licensing is the professional upgrade from Class 5. We provide Un-restricted training, which allows for up to 24 passengers (plus driver). This training will allow you to operate vehicles such as:

  • Limousines
  • Taxis
  • Passenger Vans (regular and extended)
  • Handy Dart
  • Shuttle Bus

This course combines 4 hours of instruction with 1 hour of examination with an ICBC Driver Examiner. It is usually arranged in three sessions with the student by prior appointment, typically within a seven-to-ten day period. Lesson times may be arranged for almost any time of day, any day of the week; although weekday mornings are normally preferred. Instruction will usually be arranged to take place from either our North Vancouver or Burnaby Office/Classroom locations.

The first lesson would be of 90 minute's duration; three areas of instruction will take place. The initial third of the lesson will be a Classroom Video presentation on Defensive Driving, with particular stress on observation skills and traffic space management. In the next third of the lesson the Instructor will demonstrate the procedure or a proper "Pretrip Inspection" of the vehicle. Printed information on the Pretrip, which the student can use to practice at home on their own vehicle, is also provided. In the final third of the lesson, the student driver is put behind the wheel; as they are becoming accustomed to the relatively large vehicle, the Instructor will give any direction necessary while evaluating their skills and acquired habits.

The next lesson will also be of 90 minute's duration. Approximately the first half of the lesson will focus on the Pretrip Inspection, aiding the student in memorizing the features and sequence of checking the roadworthiness of the Class 4 vehicle. The second half of the lesson will concentrate on the driving aspect, both correcting acquired bad habits and teaching skills particular to the larger vehicle, such as lane use, railway-crossing procedures, reversing procedures and passenger safety.

The final lesson will be of 120 minute's duration. The initial hour will review all aspects of inspecting and driving the Class 4 vehicle, especially in consideration of the ICBC Roadtest requirements. As soon as this final lesson is completed, the driver will then commence their Class 4 Roadtest with the ICBC Driver Examiner in the same vehicle. This may be arranged through a local Driver Services Centre, or possibly through our Burnaby ESP program [in which case the Roadtest would take place from our Burnaby Truck Training Center].

To enroll, the applicant will need to have obtained their Class 4 Learner's Licence [by studying the ICBC "Driving Commercial Vehicles" booklet and successfully passing a Knowledge Test at their Driver Services Centre], and made payment of $415.00 for their Class 4 [Unrestricted] Driving Course.

Individual training time, as well as group training sessions, may be arranged also.
