Ins & Outs of How Air Brakes Work

Brake safety is incredibly important, and air brakes operate differently than regular vehicles. Typically found in trucks, buses, trailers, and semi-trailers, air brakes use air (instead of fluid) to transmit pressure from your driver’s control to the service brake. In Burnaby and throughout BC, it is required that drivers take an air brake course to be able to operate these vehicles. Air brakes are really three different braking systems combined: a service brake system that works when you use the brake pedals, a parking brake system when you use the parking brake control, and an emergency brake system used to stop the vehicle if your other brake system fails.

Why Are Air Brakes Used in Trucks?

Air brakes are typically preferred in heavier trucks and buses because of their powerful stopping power – when they work and when they fail. If you have a brake line leak in a hydraulic system, your brakes are likely to fail because not enough friction is created to sufficiently slow your wheels. However, if you have a leak in your air brake lines, the air pressure should still decrease, activating the brakes and bringing your vehicle to a complete stop. Air brakes make driving large trucks in Abbotsford, Richmond, and throughout BC safer for you and others on the road.
